About Chukki Starr

b. Anthony Williams, 1975, Harlesden, London, England. Chukki began his career when he formed his own Echo Tone Hi Fi sound system, performing as Chukki Brown. The DJ’s debut, ‘Goodas Gal’, was produced by Stonehead of the UK-based Volcano sound and signalled Chukki’s emergence from the UK dancehall scene. His distinctive style led to recording sessions, primarily with Everton Samuels of the Ruff Cut Band. In 1994 he released a series of hits as Chukki Star, including ‘Career Time’, ‘Evilous System’, ‘Who Dem Fi Rate’, ‘Almighty Father’, and in combination with Don Campbell, ‘Reggae Music So Sweet’. In 1995 he performed DJ lyrics for Aswad on one of the numerous remixes of ‘Warrior Charge’. In 1996 Chukki performed in western Kingston on the sound system circuit, followed by sessions with some of Jamaica’s top producers. He initially recorded in combination with Edi Fitzroy at Bobby Digital’s studio, which led to sessions with African Star, Black Scorpio and Yard Face Productions. Some of his best chants included ‘The Most High’, an anthem to Haile Selassie, ‘Time To Go’, and the popular combination with Gregory Isaacs, ‘The Look Of Love’. By 1997 Chukki was considered to be one of the UK’s top DJs following the success of his own Makiel label release, ‘Forever I Shall Praise’, and the combination hit with Aisha, ‘Hard Times’. Chukki maintained a high profile in 1998 and worked with the Mad Professor for his debut album release. In July 2000 Chukki Star had crossover success with a version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Good Thing Going’, performing with UK soap star Sid Owen.
