About Dave Ray

As a member of Koerner, Ray And Glover, with ‘Spider’ John Koerner and Tony Glover, Dave ‘Snaker’ Ray (b. 17 August 1943, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, d. 28 November 2002, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) was in the vanguard of the folk revival of the 60s. An accomplished 6- and 12-string guitarist, the artist pursued a concurrent solo career with two compulsive country blues albums for Elektra Records. The first included interpretations of material by, among others, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and Lead Belly, while the follow-up featured a greater emphasis on original material. The rise of electric styles obscured Ray’s progress and it was 1968 before he re-emerged in Bamboo, a country-based duo he had formed with pianist Will Donight. Their eccentric album made little impression and Ray’s subsequent profile was distinctly low-key. However, in 1990 Ray and Glover teamed up to record Ashes In My Whiskey for the Rough Trade Records label, and Koerner, Ray And Glover reunited to release the excellent One Foot In The Groove in 1996. Ray also recorded with pianist John Beach and percussionist Kory Badertscher as the Three Bedroom Ramblers, and teamed up with Tony Glover, and Camile Baudoin and Reggie Scanlan of the Radiators in the Back Porch Rockers. In 2000, Ray formed 6L6 with Jeff Dagenhardt and David Kasik and recorded A Hollowbody Experience. He succumbed to lung cancer in November 2002.
