About Naked Lights

Naked Lights are a post-punk band from Oakland, California whose sound blends influences such as Krautrock, dub, no wave, and minimal synth. The group started out as a low-key project of Tristeza's Christopher Sprague and Camaron Stephens, who recorded Kukulkan Pyramid, a cassette of instrumental fragments released by Sanity Muffin in 2009. By the time of the considerably more ambitious 2011 cassette Chime Grove, the group incorporated additional members such as Joshua Lindenfelzer, Billy Sprague, and Chris Hash. Much more focused and fleshed out, their sound became more atmospheric and hypnotic, with moments reminiscent of horror movie scores as well as basement psychedelia. German label Adagio830 issued Chime Grove on vinyl in 2013, but in a significantly different configuration than the cassette version, cutting many songs from the original release and adding several newer recordings. By the time of the album's re-release, vocalist Aurora Crispin had joined Naked Lights, and their music had changed from synth-driven psychedelic rock to a more urgent art-punk sound, with angular rhythms, dub-inspired basslines, occasional saxophone bleats, and swooping vocals reminiscent of bands such as LiLiPUT and the Raincoats. Recorded between 2013 and 2015, the group's On Nature album was released by Castle Face in early 2016. ~ Paul Simpson
