Kiki, the heroine of Eiko Kadono’s 1985 novel ‘Majo no takkyubin’, is a 13 year-old who sets out on a journey with her black cat Jiji, following a rule that says she must live on her own for one year in a different place to qualify as a full-fledged witch. Full of hope she sets out, only to find that things do not always go her way, and that growing up can be a painful experience. She sticks it out, however, and this moving story of a young girl coming of age is a long-selling classic in Japanese children’s literature.
