Just how persuasive had Billy Joel’s songs become by the late ’70s? The infallible vocal melody on the keyboard-driven “My Life” and the barbed narrative on guitar-rocker “Big Shot” practically define American culture at the time. Tunes like “Zanzibar” and “Stiletto” skillfully blend elements of Broadway, jazz-rock and nightclub jive, and there’s epic bittersweetness in “Rosalinda’s Eyes”. The soaring balladry of “Until the Night” would do The Righteous Brothers proud, but it’s the title-song finale that brings this Phil Ramone-produced beauty full circle.
