The perky songs of Jack Peñate’s debut, Matinée, captured a crossover wave in indie pop, but for Everything Is New, he and producer Paul Epworth went in search of something else. It’s a classic exploratory second record, stuffed full of influences: highlife guitars, Tropicália, disco rhythms. The musical experiments result in a dancier, more starry-eyed and euphoric Peñate, but all his new colours are kept within the lines of solidly built, heartfelt pop.

In many ways, Jack Peñate is Lily Allen minus the sarcasm and the party frocks.
