Editors’ Notes

Scottish singer/songwriter Paolo Nutini earned wide international acclaim for his vocal dexterity and seemingly effortless melodic instincts. After a five-year break, Nutini’s third album, Caustic Love, is a confident, soulful affair that relies on bass-driven grooves and heartbroken refrains. Created with producer Dani Castelar (who was also at the mixing board for 2009’s breezy Sunny Side Up), songs like “Let Me Down Easy” and “Scream (Funk Up My Life)” feature hard-hitting choruses and strutting backbeats. When he offers a mournful, Richie Havens-inspired ballad in “Better Man” or the funk-infused melody of “Fashion” (a duet with visionary R&B vocalist Janelle Monáe), it rounds out the sophisticated, emotionally gripping collection.

Shortly after discovering homegrown folkies like John Martyn, the teenaged Nutini left school to focus on his own musical development, eventually moving from Paisley to London at age...
