Album Review

One of Gravitar's many positives is that they are true to their times; though their music is as psychedelic as it gets, it never sounds like a throwback. This holds true for all their releases including Chinga Su Corazon, despite the fact that it's their debut. The band would tighten up on later albums but Chinga contains a sense of discovery and hopeful exploration that gives it a particular charm. Interesting, too, is that the feel is slightly more rock, more adhering to some structure or form than where the band would later venture. None of this is to suggest that Gravitar sounds naïve here, though. It's just that they haven't yet morphed into the monster they would become. The pieces are definitely there; buzzing and building tension, churning static and noise, abstract vocals, all these elements are convincingly introduced into the mix. Because of this, Chinga Su Corazon holds up on its own. Overall, though, the disc is most important as a necessary step, as it is the start of Gravitar's landmark progression within the progressive.
