The Gaylords put on a good show, which is why so many of their albums were live recordings. The Gaylords at the Shamrock is one of them, recorded live at the Shamrock Hotel in Houston, TX, in 1962. Pared down to a duo from a vocal trio at this stage, the two Gaylords set out to demonstrate that variety is the spice of life with a program of comedy and music that is deliberately varied to an extreme. The group announces that "We Love to Sing" before bouncing from "Hava Negilah" to a twangy country medley to a lampoon of Elvis Presley on a medley that includes "It's Now or Never" and "All Shook Up." They also pair the French-flavored tunes "Fascination" and "Lucky Pierre" in yet another medley, and dip into the Irving Berlin songbook for "How About Me." There's an echo of the vaudeville tradition and the variety show in the Gaylords' effort to offer something for everyone, and, judging from the enthusiastic audience's reception, they succeeded swimmingly.
