Album Review

Eighteen classic cuts by Roy Moss, stripped-down high-energy rockabilly, with two surprises. The first is the number of tunes by country greats, including Ernest Tubb, Red Foley, Gordon Terry, Marty Robbins, and Jimmie Rodgers, that get the rockabilly treatment here alongside the likes of Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins. The second is the number associated uniquely with Moss, the lean and lusty "Yes Juanita's Mine," "Wiggle Walkin' Baby," "You Don't Know My Mind," and "You're My Big Baby Now," which are a match for "Johnny B. Goode," "Mona Lisa," etc. in Moss' hands. He isn't a threatening persona in the manner of Gene Vincent, and lacks the raw appeal of Elvis in his early days, but he's a good player, adding some lively guitar embellishments to much of this material. The sound on this reissue from Eagle Records of Aachen, Germany is as clean as the playing.
