Album Review

Flashback is a first-rate retrospective of banjo player J.D. Crowe. Originally released on the Rounder label in 1994, Flashback traces Crowe's formative years with the Osborne Brothers, Jimmy Martin and as leader of the New South. The album was embraced by bluegrass fans and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album upon release. Among the 12 tracks include "Nashville Skyline Rag," "Long Journey Home," "When the Angels Carry Me Home," and "Waiting for You." Flashback is an excellent way to get acquainted with all aspects of J.D. Crowe's music.

J.D. Crowe is so much a modern master of the banjo that some banjos are manufactured with what's known as "Crowe spacing," with the strings further apart on the bridge. Crowe first gained notice with bluegrass bandleader Jimmy Martin and his Sunny Mountain Boys in the late 1950s, before forming his own band, the New South.
