iTunes Review

MGMT’s full-length debut is a densely layered, proudly psychedelic delight. The songs are strong enough to stand up to the bold (mostly synthesized) aural choices made by producer Dave Fridmann (of Flaming Lips fame). Fridmann’s skillful touch, spot-on sequencing, and a distinctive MGMT sparkle help tie together these stylistic adventures. This colorful debut is a dazzling trip through 40 years of psychedelic pop.

Customer Reviews

Yes, yes. Very good.

I once read in a MGMT interview that they thought it was impossible to create anything original theses days and that people should just except that and take influence from the past. If that is the case then they have certainly taken it on board with influences derived from everything from Sonic Youth to Bob Dylan to Elton John. This album is rippled with irony as much as it is contagious melodies with songs like Time to Pretend about living the rock star life and The handshake about signing to a major label. I don’t think anyone could deny the catchy riffs on this album, like in Kids and Time To Pretend, which seem crawl into your mind and take over. This is a band who doesn't take them selves to seriously and is all the better for it. This album is a masterpiece. They pushes pop to it's very limit and every song sounds commercial in the oddest of ways. Take my word, this band will be massive.

Best Album of Year to date

Original, funky, stylish and catchy. What more do you want. These guys have serious talent and are going to be huge. The best album of the year so far. Roll on album number two.

Finding an unlikely middle point between Suicide's hostile, proto-electro punk art noise and the sardonic, pop-friendly sound of the Flaming Lips, MGMT started as electroclash musical terrorists but quickly grew into an eclectic, brainy pop group with psychedelic overtones. MGMT first formed in 2002, during Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden's freshman year as art students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. The band was initially known as the Management, and its shows consisted...
