Editors’ Notes

Lulu is a story of a young woman who’s seen quite a bit. Originally conceived as a Berlin theatre production by avant-garde director Robert Wilson, Lulu is an interesting collaboration between two iconoclasts, Lou Reed and Metallica. It’s more in line with a Lou Reed album; he narrates and sings most of the material here, with Metallica’s James Hetfield providing backing vocals and occasional lead-vocal relief. The collaboration’s real benefit is that it gives Reed his best backing band in years. Metallica serve his material, putting seasoned chops into what was, for the band, a very quick recording process. “Iced Honey” is the album’s most accessible moment. “Cheat on Me”, “Dragon” and “Junior Dad” all deserve their epic lengths. Deliberately squeamish moments are played up for maximum impact, but it’s the music’s strategic ugliness in spots (“Little Dog” makes efficient use of Reed’s angry-old-man bitterness) that makes this an uncompromising triumph. Lulu is closer in spirit to Reed’s Velvet Underground days than anything Metallica have attempted.

So many major artists (naming no names) have seriously disappointed this year but this, despite a mixed critical response, bizarrely redolent, and not only in its unprecedented nature, of Scott Walker's Tilt and The Drift, not to mention The Fall (anything and everything!) finds both parties at the very top of their respective game(s).
Album of the Year so far, barring certain high-profile and spectacularly repackaged and augmented reissues - thinking Pink Floyd and The Who!

Having a laugh

Sounds like an old homeless drunk ranting over a bunch of brawling flea ridden cats in a pile of garbage

THAT DAY NEVER COMES, but if it came it would be a PERFECT DAY

Music saves lives - of that I am sure - the more I read about Lou Reed the more I know that music saved his life, Mine too if the truth be known. I think Metallica are a hugely important band, they somehow took all the aggression and anger that they had in their lives and pounded it out on a guitar, let it rock in their own truly original way, for me one of the most amazing things is how they have brought the music with them as they have gotten older. How they have grown. This Lp is a guitar masterpiece and if the term 'less is more' needed explaination well listen to this Lp - The Track that has had the most impact and more than likely because its the last track is 'junior dad' Dear lord god above its so beautiful, heart wrenching and considering that Kirk Hammetts dad had died 4 weeks before recording it pretty autobiographical. I also love 'the view' and 'cheat on me' - clever lyrics, ragging rolling guitars rockin. The Velvet underground changed my life, changed how I viewed the world and changed my concept of music, its all in the Lp, the strings at the end just reeked of John Cale. In this era of downloading, this lp is probably the best excuse in the world to pay for music, studio Lps like this need to be consumed legally and the concept supported and the musicians rewarded for baring there souls

Good work, guys I would give you 10 stars if i could

The career of Lou Reed defied capsule summarization. Like David Bowie (whom Reed directly inspired in many ways), he made over his image many times, mutating from theatrical glam rocker to strung-out junkie to avant-garde noiseman to straight rock & roller to your average guy. Few would deny Reed's immense importance and considerable achievements. As has often been written, he expanded the vocabulary of rock & roll lyrics into the previously forbidden territory of kinky sex, drug use (and abuse),...
