A Great Rock Record

For those of you who know Taylor as Jenny on Gossip Girl, you are definitely in for a surprise. While Jenny gets a little racy on the new season, Taylor in the Pretty Reckless manages to cover a wide array of topics that are all enticingly edgy, but also a whole lot of fun. The album opener is a ruccus rock anthem with powerful drums and screeching guitars that set the mood extremely well. Since You're Gone keeps up the same pace, but revs up the stakes a little, getting a whole lot louder, and making a flawlessly shouty bridge that convinces you just how much better she is without her old lover. Make Me Wanna Die is a love song of epic proportions, drowning in teenage angst, but managing to still be a decent song. Light Me Up changes things up a bit, as a more folky tune that is an ode to the haters. Just Tonight is the first of three real ballads on the record, all of which are pure brilliance. While it is a ballad, don't mistake it for being soft, as it is still a pure rock tune. Miss Nothing is sheer brilliance, with a hooky chorus that sounds straight from a pop record, but still maintaining all the edge of the rest of the album. Taylor makes sure to up the controversy as well, seeing as Goin' Down seems at first like a song about murdering her cheating boyfriend, but is really flipping the bird to the hypocritical and corrupt Catholic church. Nothing Left To Lose is a desperate ballad about where she finds herself after her older man is gone, 'lost between Elvis and suicide'. It's a really good track that is nostalgic and relatable for the demographic. Factory Girl is pure punk insanity, and probably one of the best tracks on the album. The roaring guitars, screechy backup vocals, and catchy handclappable chorus makes it nonstop fun. The album draws to a close with You, which is an insanely sweet song about unreciprocated love. The accoustic feel is a great way to draw the album to a close. The bonus tracks are both quite good, in fact excellent in terms of what most B-Sides are like. Far From Never has a similar feel to Make Me Wanna Die (dare I say better!) and Everybody Wants Something From Me is a unique rock song that is both fun and telling of her celebrity life. If you aren't afraid of rock music, even if you are mostly a pop fan, this album is a must buy.

Amazing!

I love it, I bought it a few months ago and it's become one of my favourite albums! Taylor Momsen plays Jenny in Gossip Girl, and it was originally why I found out about the album. It's a mixture of upbeat songs and slower songs that all have excellent vocals and meaningful lyrics. I'd definitely recommend this album.

Great album

The Pretty Reckless released their debut album with the fear of singer Taylor Momsen's role on the show Gossip Girl overshadowing the band and the album. However, once you listen to the album, you soon realise that there is much musical ability within this band and some fantastic songs. I would highly recommend any fans of rock music to take a listen to the album. Standout tracks are 'Make Me Wanna Die', 'Light Me Up', 'Just Tonight' and 'You'.

Like her co-star Leighton Meester, Taylor Momsen rose to fame as an actress on the TV series Gossip Girl before launching a separate music career. She formed the Reckless in 2009, later changing the band’s name to the Pretty Reckless to avoid trademark problems. With Momsen on vocals, John Secolo on guitar, Matt Chiarelli on bass, and Nick Carbone on drums, the group began finding a balance between hard rock and post-grunge, taking cues from female-fronted bands like Hole and the Runaways along the...
