Album Review

R.U.L.E. doesn't have much going for it, but it does include a few noteworthy songs: the album's lead single, "Wonderful," an R. Kelly showcase that also boasts an Ashanti feature; the album's street single, "New York," a Cool & Dre production with a pop-gangsta edge and strong raps from Fat Joe and Jadakiss; and lastly, "Life Goes On," a 2Pac-style ballad highlighted by features for Trick Daddy and Inc in-house producer Chink Santana. The album's remaining 60 minutes consist of standard-issue Ja Rule album filler: dreary pseudo-autobiographical raps that paint a conflicted portrait of Ja Rule, the paranoid pop-rap gangsta who believes himself to be a street martyr. Still, even if Ja Rule as an artist seems increasingly inauthentic with each passing album release, "Wonderful" is R.U.L.E.'s saving grace, playing like a trademark R. Kelly song, albeit one featuring Ja Rule and Ashanti.

Ja Rule: The R.U.L.E. Ain't Dead

After Rule's much publicized beef with Eminem and 50 Cent came to an end, he set to work on his sixth studio album, R.U.L.E. If you look up other reviews of this album elsewhere, they will probably not praise this record, as 50 Cent's star was rising high at the time, and as we all know today, music critics are incredibly biased and tend to hop on the bandwagon. Anyway, this is without a doubt one of Ja's best albums, it's perfectly balanced, the productions are pristine, the guest appearances are solid, and the lyrics are exceptional. In fact the only downside to the album is the unnecessary skits. Aside from this, Ja Rule is a versatile rapper who can rap well in any type of rap or hip-hop song, whether it's a pop-rap duet (Never Thought) or a hard street like track ('Bout My Business). We all know Ja is the king of pop rap female duets but his gangsta orientated tracks are equally as good (especially on this album), and if anyone wants to question his street cred, they should do the research and realise that Ja Rule is no fake. 9.5/10 Track Picks: Wonderful, New York, Caught Up, Gun Talk

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

As the flagship artist for producer Irv Gotti's Def Jam-affiliated Murder Inc. label, Ja Rule became one of the rap industry's most commercially successful artists during the early 2000s, working closely with the hitmaking producer and his stable of talent. Born Jeffrey Atkins on February 29, 1976, in Queens, New York, Ja Rule established himself with Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), a hardcore debut album similar in style to the rugged thug rap then popularized by DMX and the Ruff Ryder collective.
