Album Review

Originally released in 1997 in Totalitar's native Sweden, Ni Maste Bort — rough translation: "You've Got To Go" — is straight-up, old-fashioned hardcore punk in the classic early-'80s tradition, when a new crop of bands took the pop hooks and careerist aspirations out of the original wave of punks and reduced the music to wild-eyed blasts of guitars, drums, and hectoring vocals, with each track in and out in under two minutes flat, and lyrics concerning oppression, hatred, and other evils of modern society. The fact that said vocals are in Swedish doesn't really matter, as it's likely that even a native speaker could catch more than the occasional chanted slogan. The power of the music is instead expressed in the vehemence of the shouted vocals, and the hyper-speed blur of the ultra-tight rhythm section. Hardcore punk as pure as it gets, Ni Maste Bort is an overwhelming listen.
