Album Review

Muggsy Spanier's direct and basic cornet style was always a bit predictable, sticking to heated variations of the melody during his solos. By the 1950s, his playing was generally less interesting than it had been a short time earlier, and his touring Dixieland band stuck mostly to Dixieland and swing warhorses. This live LP features Spanier with trombonist Ralph Hutchinson, clarinetist Darnell Howard, pianist Mel Grant, bassist Truck Parham and drummer Barrett Deems. They sound quite enthusiastic playing such typical Dixieland songs as "Royal Garden Blues," "Dippermouth Blues," "Farewell Blues" and "That's a Plenty," and the results are livelier than one might expect.
