Album Review

Fantasy's Greatest Hits collection may be devastatingly sparse, but what it does have is pure Staple Singers gold. Focusing primarily on their '60s soul era, the scant eight tracks, which include "Respect Yourself," "I'll Take You There," and "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)," serve as a great primer for the casual fan of their non-gospel material, but the seasoned listener would be better off picking up the blissfully comprehensive Ultimate Staple Singers: A Family Affair.

The Staples' story goes all the way back to 1915 in Winona, Mississippi, when patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples entered the world. A contemporary and familiar of Charley Patton's, Roebuck quickly became adept as a solo blues guitarist, entertaining at local dances and picnics. He was also drawn to the church, and by 1937 he was singing and playing guitar with the Golden Trumpets, a spiritual group based out of Drew, Mississippi.
