Album Review

So who is Emil Bruh? You won't find out from the liner notes here. Nor will you discover who's accompanying him. In fact, you won't learn anything from them at all, beyond the fact that the music was probably recorded around 1985. The style, however, is much older, back from the time when violin klezmer had a distinctly gypsy sound. That Bruh is good, and on occasion extremely good — just listen to "The Dance of Old Men," for example — is beyond any question. But the style is dated, even if played well. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and Bruh stands as a good exponent of it. "Kinder Korn" and "Melody and Dance of Folklore" are both outstanding, even if the backing remains somewhat pedestrian and anonymous. Lovely as the music is, however, it tells little about Bruh — and that might remain an unanswered mystery forever. Whoever he is or was, he did a good job on this recording.
