Album Review

Adapting classic poetry into song form is an ongoing sport with many stylistic variations — Ted Jacobs' approach, for instance, is light years away from the bombastic orchestrations of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, where massed synthesizers face down T.S. Eliot. Jacobs' approach to Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry (drawn from A Child's Garden of Verses) is much lighter, making use of many of the more playful elements of Celtic music to emphasize the fun of the words. There are some more serious moments, of course — "Block City" being rendered in a very solemn manner — but the overall tone is pleasantly airy. Jacobs shares instrumental duties throughout, and tackles the occasional lead vocal. Laura Dailavo and Amy Deegan carry the larger part of the vocal weight, and do so exceptionally well; David Connolly, Molly Kreppej, and others are also on hand in various vocal capacities. A Child's Garden of Song is beautifully rendered, and sounds wonderful. It also has an extra element that makes it a good recommendation — it doesn't pander to children and doesn't talk down. As a result, this is more than a good children's record; it works very well for adults as well. ~ Steven E. McDonald, Rovi
