Album Review

Dusty Springfield's original pose was not as a British soul chanteuse but as a peppy British folkie as a member of the Springfields, Britain's answer to Peter, Paul and Mary. They were the hottest group in Brit music circles for a period of three years in the pre-Beatle days of the early '60s, breaking up in the summer of 1963 at the height of their success with Dusty going on to even greater fame as a solo artist. In their short time in the spotlight, their music grew more complex while never really straying far away from the folk roots, as witnessed on later tracks like "No Sad Songs for Me" and the alternate take of "Allentown Jail" included here. Of course, their big hit "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" is here in both original English and German language versions along with folkie staples like "Cottonfields," "Goodnight Irene," and "Dear John." Half of the album's 20 tracks are items seeing their very first United States issue including the beautiful "Come on Home," "Far Away Places," and "Star of Hope." An interesting view back at the beginnings of Britain's finest pop singer and the group she was a part of.
