Album Review

The relatively obscure Mae Barnes does a fine job of straddling the boundaries between jazz and cabaret music on this 1958 swing session. Backed by a quartet that includes trumpeter Buck Clayton, Barnes is in fine form on the most jazz-oriented recording of her career.

Mae Barnes was a singer whose basic but swinging approach fell between jazz and middle-of-the-road pop music. At the age of 12, she started working as both a singer and a tap dancer. Barnes appeared in such shows as Running Wild, Shuffle Along, and By the Beautiful Sea in addition to performing in the Ziegfeld Follies.
