Album Review

The idea that the spazzy/electro/noise genre is a narrow and homogeneous field is blown to bits by this split release pairing Viki with the Hair Police. Viki (aka Lindsay Karty) is from the Detroit area, and the music she makes is like a middle ground between fellow scenesters Wolf Eyes and Adult. The throbbing, hissing sounds she throttles out of salvaged electronic devices have a distinctly urban feel: cold, distant, affectedly disinterested, and robotic at times. Echoes of Kraftwerk can be heard on "No Work" as she intones from underneath an avalanche of crackling noise, "Relax, enjoy yourself while you can." But at heart, Viki just wants you to dance, as is made clear on the corroded disco track "Compulsive Sigh." Lexington, KY's Hair Police, although quite similar on the surface, are far rowdier, skuzzier, and couldn't give a damn about discos. They're more interested in causing aural pain and neurological damage, and leaving you in a twitching heap on the floor. "Not Raft, But Cage" is their finest moment: a moaning, horror-filled view into the heart of darkness that places them in the fine tradition of the Nihilist Spasm Band and the Boredoms. The pairing of these two groups makes this brief collection far more interesting and worthy of repeat listening than if it had featured just one of them alone.
