Album Review

Not to be confused with Jay-Z, Danish teen Jay-Kid drops his unsettlingly nuanced Michael Jackson impersonation on the world outside his homeland with Bringing You the Magic. Though he's occasionally hamstrung by canned backing beats, Jay-Kid (real name: Yannick Harrison) really does sound nearly exactly like Michael Jackson. Versions of "Blame It on the Boogie" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" are relentlessly bouncy and energetic; Jay hits his marks with keening "hee-hees" and throaty wrangles; about the only MJ quarks he doesn't incorporate are the sha-moans. As much as he sounds like Jackson, however, this Kid will never be on the same level as his idol. Takes on "Rock With You" and "P.Y.T. [Pretty Young Thing]" are held back by lacking backing tracks. "Human Nature" gives young Jay an opportunity to stretch his vocal chords a bit, but it too is dressed in awkward dance-pop rhythms. Since Jay-Kid has performed at functions honoring him, there must be an official endorsement from the Gloved One regarding all of this. And diehard MJ fans will be quite interested in Bringing You the Magic and Jay-Kid's shtick. But for most, it will seem like a rather strange exercise in pint-sized hero worship.
