Ratings and Reviews
With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!
Don’t understand why they make the silly change
First of all, this is a great app so I still give it three stars. I’ve been using it to learn Spanish. BUT I’m so annoyed by the recent change they made in the new version! Before you didn’t have to type English words for translation, you just needed to pick up the right combination of words, so you didn’t waste time on typing English, a language you’ve known. That’s exactly the reason I switch from Memrise to Duolingo. Now with the change, you have to type English words letter by letter, which is so inconvenient, especially when you use the app on a bus. After all I’m using the app not for learning English spelling or typing! I think the product manager didn’t really think from user’s perspective and made a very stupid decision. I regret so much upgrading to the new version. I wish I could downgrade to the previous version.
Great except for speech recognition and the annoying green owl.
A great app with bite sized lessons. Well paced with thorough opportunity for revision and testing.
In principle I like the health bar. It means you don't try to cover too much in a day and spread your learning too thin. Instead you focus on a few topics and cover them well. You can boost the health bar by revising previous lessons and can also support your revision with the conversations and Tinycards app.
My only issues are firstly the speech recognition in the conversations is very poor. Even my Spanish friends have problems being understood by the app from time to time. Secondly, the annoying green owl telling me I'm doing a good job. Who really wants animated motivation. At least give us an option to turn it off. Preferably shoot and roast it.
