Rosetta->Bussu->Babel. in that order for me - Rosetta is way ahead, different quality level of learning. Babel, is technically good, you build your reading and writing skills easily here, Busuu is better in my opinion due to social, fun element, and a moderately better focus on listening comprehension. Rosetta is streets ahead of both giving what most of us grave, a better listening comprehension of the French spoken word. Once tried - you never go back.

if you learn by acquisition, its for you

im not a linguist or anything fancy but i do really like learning languages as a hobby, so as you can imagine ive tried almost all the mainstream language apps and sites. this is the first time ive paid for a resource and im personally happy that i did.

my favourite thing about rosetta stone is that instead of giving you a word/phrase and its translation, it shows the word/phrase accompanied by a picture (you can click a button to translate but its not automatic), therefore you learn by acquisition as opposed to rote learning. language acquisition is my preferred method of learning. the only problem with this method is its disregard for teaching grammar rules, which is unfortunately a pit most of these language apps fall into (rosetta stone no exception).

one thing i prefer about duolingo or memrise is theyre fun and more interactive. rosetta stone is kinda bland visually. its also frustrating that if you choose to learn a language that uses a different alphabet, such as arabic, cyrillic or hangeul, the app does not offer to teach you this first and instead you go straight in to your first lesson unable to read the text!

overall do i think its astoundingly better than other FREE apps available? honestly no. i think if youre willing to pay for a program, then this is the one to go with. if not, theres so many free resources available for any language you want to learn that will do the same job.

Please Fix This One Thing

Otherwise amazing app, and amazing program. I’ve picked up a lot of French and love how new worlds are slipped in so you build vocabulary without even noticing.

However, the translation feature doesn’t work on every page. This is frustrating as you try and learn the subtle difference on how to phrase a sentence and can’t because you don’t see the translation. So you end up guessing witch picture goes with which sentence structure without really learning the difference and why you say it this way instead of that way. After paying for a subscription I’m getting a little frustrated with guessing rather than learning.
Please fix this on an otherwise extremely helpful app.
