About Chico Buarque

Singer, songwriter, poet, novelist, and playwright Chico Buarque is one of Brazil's living cultural icons. In addition to dozens of recordings, some 1500 of his songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists internationally. In a plaintive, genteel singing voice, his approach to samba, bossa, and MPB is signified by iconoclastic, often politically pointed lyrics and ever-evolving, complex harmonic structures. A founding member of the Tropicalia school, 1971's Construção, written while he was exiled in Italy, is one of its most important recordings. 1973's Calabar-O Elogio da Tracao wed jazz, classical, and samba. 1978's star-studded Chico Barque is a samba classic. 1988's Dança Da Meia Lua is a major theatrical work written in collaboration with Edu Lobo. 1998's As Cidades placed two s- ingles in the Top 40, and 2006's Carioca was packaged with the acclaimed session documentary Desconstrução. 2017's Caravanas astonished listeners with its renewed vitality.
