Based in Sweden, Daniel Norgren is a prolific singer/songwriter whose mix of rustic blues, folk, and homespun experimentalism has earned him a devoted following throughout Scandinavia and Europe. Since debuting in 2006, he has released a steady stream of eclectic albums and EPs on his own Superpuma label, ranging in style from the raucous blues of 2008's Outskirt to the earthy ambience of 2013's Buck and the soulful analog spirit of 2019's Wooh Dang, which marked his first proper international release of new material. Growing up outside the Swedish city of Borås, Norgren took an early interest in American music which he heard from his musician father. Pre-war blues and country became a particular inspiration for the budding artist and this filtration of rural Americana laid the foundation for his own distinctive songwriting style. Norgren was in his early twenties when he founded Superpuma Records in order to release a set of bluesy lo-fi demos he'd recorded at home. That album, Kerosene Dreams, was released in 2006 and set Norgren on a journey of artistic exploration and invention that has deepened with each subsequent release. The gritty Outskirt followed in 2008 and gained fans outside of Sweden, leading to Norgren's first tours of Europe and a wider exposure that he built on with his third album, 2010's Horrifying Deatheating Bloodspider. With 2013's Buck, his music took a more experimental turn. Eerie textural field recordings, studio manipulations, and lengthy psychedelic ruminations found a home alongside more pastoral, folk-tinged songs that were deeply connected to the natural world. Two years later, Norgren issued a pair of albums, Alabursy and Green Stone, both of which headed in a more ambient direction with analog synths, piano, and accordion taking precedence over his usual guitar and drums. By this point he'd established himself in Europe and in 2016 he finally headed to the source of his most significant inspiration and played his first set of U.S. shows in the Pacific Northwest. An appearance at Portland's Pickathon Festival served as a memorable introduction to a receptive American audience. A 2017 compilation, Skogens Frukter, was released in hopes of getting North America up to speed on a decade's worth of Norgren's previous recordings. In 2019, he released Wooh Dang, an all-analog record captured live in a 19th century Swedish farmhouse. It was his first album to receive a widespread international release. ~ Timothy Monger
