Group Inerane

About Group Inerane

A group of guitar-wielding musicians opposing the cultural marginalization of the nomadic Tuareg people of northern Niger, Group Inerare relay incisive political commentary with a combination of Western-style amplified rock and blues, and folk music in the traditional mode. Led by the mysterious guitar hero Bibi Ahmed, the group’s idiosyncratic mix of bluesy riffing over hypnotic chants and rhythms at times recalls the blissful excesses of Western psychedelia in its more sublime moments. Though Group Inerare has been together since the ‘90s, Western audiences got their first taste of the group’s unique brand of Saharan psych when U.S.-based ethnomusicology specialists Sublime Frequencies released the band’s 2007 album, Guitars From Agadez. ~ Dave Shim
