SMC hosted the NexTrend Conference, “Dynamic Shifts in Global Logistics,” bringing together an impressive panel of speakers on logistics industry trends. Logistics, the global movement of goods and services, is rapidly growing, particularly in Los Angeles County with its huge ports and major international airport. Speakers at the conference included former Congressman Steve Kuykendall and Dr. Martin Wachs, Director of Transportation, Space and Technology with Santa Monica-based Rand Corp. SMC is one of four community colleges in Southern California – and six statewide – that have been funded by the state to provide corporate training in logistics careers and to start certificate and degree programs in the field. Logistics is the second largest employment sector in the U.S. and is forecast to continue to grow, according to industry professionals. Organizations spend nearly $800 billion a year on logistics in the U.S., and worldwide, more than $1.4 trillion is spent annually.
