The Great Gatsby follows would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
Review of The Great Gatsby 2013
I went to see this movie on the 25th of may 2013 before my leaving cert exams this year, as I was studying "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald as the novel for my comparative course in English. In my opinion Baz Luhrmann's version of The Great Gatsby was absolutely brilliant. Although it may not have caught the good side of most critics, as a student studying the novel I can honestly say it made me enjoy the novel even more than before. Leonardo De Caprio is one of my favourite actors who played the role of Jay Gatsby perfectly! All off the actors and actresses were perfectly suited to their roles which made me more interested while watching the film I literally could not keep my eyes of the screen! I have a plethora of reasons why this film is brilliant however, I could never write them all down. All I can say is read the novel and then watch this film to be as fascinated as I was. Trust me you won't be sorry it is a big reason why I chose to continue English for third level to become a teacher and hopefully teach The Great Gatsby to other leaving cert students in the future. :)
