Joe Arroyo Essentials

The late Joe Arroyo's music was nothing short of revolutionary. A proud Afro-Latino born in the slums of Cartagena, he got his big break as part of Fruko y sus Tesos in the ‘70s, then formed his own salsa orchestra, La Verdad, catapulting to superstardom in the ‘80s. Innovating upon what Fania started in New York, Arroyo infused the rhythms of Colombia's Caribbean coast into salsa, and birthed his own socially conscious son. His magnum opus, “Rebelión,” painted a vivid picture of slavery in 17th-century Colombia and gave a dignified voice to black culture in Latin America.
