A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack for Mani Ratnam’s 1998 romantic thriller was his third collaboration with the director, and features lyrics by Gulzar. Sukhwinder Singh’s powerful vocals are backed by a chugging-train rhythm in the film's biggest Urdu-language hit, “Chaiyya Chaiyya”, which has since been widely used in TV, film and stage shows. Elsewhere, a Malayalam chorus backs Lata Mangeshkar on the elegant yet angsty “Jiya Jale”, while a smooth, tugging bass line anchors the ardent and intense “Dil Se Re”.
