EDITORS’ NOTES

Kaala is a soundtrack with real bite—a collection of propulsive, body-moving tracks full of social commentary on urban conditions in India. Composer Santhosh Narayanan works with sparse classical and folk sounds on “Thanga Sela”, “Kannamma” and “Urimayai Meetpom”. There’s no shortage of rap on “Poraaduvom”, “Theruvilakku” and “Semma Weightu”—“Poraaduvom” in particular bounces like an American G-funk track from the ‘90s. Then there’s the guitar riffs and hard rock of “Katravai Patravai”.
