For this tribute to John Coltrane (which he performs with bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott), pianist McCoy Tyner performs some offbeat material including 'Trane pieces that preceded his stay with the classic quartet (such as "Giant Steps") plus a few unrelated standards (including "In Walked Bud" and "Good Morning Heartache"). Six of the nine selections were composed by Coltrane and, although this was his umpteenth 'Trane tribute, McCoy Tyner still sounds enthusiastic and adventurous performing the timeless music.
