Recensione album

Collectables' Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters/Rockin' & Driftin' contains two original early albums from the Drifters on one disc. The first of these albums was recorded before Clyde McPhatter, their original lead vocalist, left the band. McPhatter is generally considered one of the greatest singers of his era, and listening to this album, it's easy to figure out why — his delivery, phrasing and falsetto are thrilling. His replacement, Johnny Moore, wasn't as amazing, but he was nevertheless an immensely talented R&B vocalist, and he helps make Rockin' & Driftin' as strong an album as Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters. On both albums, there are solid album tracks along with hits, which is why this disc is so entertaining — there's very little filler on either record, just great R&B. Anyone who wants to dig deeper than the hits will enjoy this disc, even if the packaging and remastering could have been better.

In a way, he was the most improbable of R&B stars, a...
