About Aṣa

French Nigerian singer and songwriter Aṣa fuses reggae, soul, jazz and pop into an irresistible hybrid that’s earned her fans around the world. • Born in Paris, raised in Nigeria, Aṣa drew early inspiration from her father, a cinematographer who listened to a lot of great music. He introduced her to artists like Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone. • Aṣa knew from an early age that she wanted to make music, but while living with her Muslim grandparents after high school, she stuggled to express herself. • She began writing songs as a teenager and bought a guitar at 20 or 21 using money that had been set aside for school. After meeting her musical partner, Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, in 2004, she returned to Paris to pursue music. • Around this time, her first single “Eyé Adaba”, was starting to get popular in Nigeria. This led to her signing a record deal with Naïve Records. • Her 2007 debut album, Asa, won the French Prix Constantin Award in 2008. • Asa’s 2010 sophomore album, Beautiful Imperfection, features collaborations with French composer Nicolas Mollard. • After spending 2012 to 2013 traveling to places like Lagos, Berlin, Paris, London and the US, she released her third album, Bed of Stone, in 2014. • The singer spent several years trying to “live normal” after heavy touring before returning with her fourth album, Lucid, in 2019.
