Abstract: This article brings to focus the challenges faced and the responses undertaken by Southern California's Haitian diaspora, a cultural community little observed before. Unlike the quite populous East Coast Haitian diasporic enclaves, the community in Los Angeles suffers from a lack of numbers and from remnants of the Haitian class system and its biases, making solidarity somewhat difficult. Despite this disconnect, there are those Haitians in Los Angeles who work diligently to preserve and maintain their culture and identity. Using scholarship regarding the East Coast Haitian diaspora to illustrate connections to the West Coast's diaspora, the article attempts to deepen the reader's understanding of the larger cultural, racial and ethnic complexities of U.S. immigrant culture, of which Los Angeles is one but not the only epicenter. Much of this article's information on Angeleno Haitians comes from three interviews with Haitian-born members of the diaspora who currently reside in Los Angeles. Keywords: diaspora, Haitian community, Haitian Americans, culture and identity, assimilation, United States immigrant culture, community building, Ethnic Studies.
