Album Review

The group's second album has tighter pop songs (though the chords are still a bit derivative of Dino Jr.) and an edgier production sense reminiscent of Pan sonic and other electronic experimenters underlying on tracks like "Day 7," "Another Planet" and "Chemicals." The fusion of bubbly electronics and ragged guitar-pop works better than expected, lifting Shrink above a raft of other post-rock acts.

Formed near Munich as a post-hardcore band, the Notwist gradually began to embrace a fusion of classic '80s indie pop songwriting and scruffy electronic backings indebted to Oval and Autechre. The quartet comprises brothers Markus and Micha Acher (on vocals/guitar and bass, respectively) plus programmer/keyboard player Martin Gretschmann and drummer Martin Messerschmid.
