iTunes Review

The 2012 sophomore album from the Indianapolis prog-core quintet The Contortionist abounds with complexities. Fans of the band (and its fused genres) should immediately hear nods to Rush’s mechanical textures contrasting restrained death metal indicative of Cynic. When the song simmers down, there are trace elements of Dream Theatre’s cinematic approach to building soundscapes. And though Carpenter comes out swinging on the explosive “Causality,” the angular precision of the musicianship holding him down sounds inspired by the busy compositions of Between the Buried and Me.
