Pat Boone's first album, Pat Boone, is, for the most part, a compilation of his early hits. The tracks include both sides of his first five records (with six out of the ten tracks making it into the Top 20) and also includes two "new" songs, "Rich in Love" and "Now I Know." Several of the cuts demonstrate Boone's ability as a power singer, although he is not commonly thought of in that vein. For example, on "Take the Time," his singing begins smoothly, inconspicuously, much like many of his other softer ballads, but then builds to a powerful and dramatic climax. This same style is evident also on "No Other Arms" and "Now I Know," with young Boone sounding like a budding Eddie Fisher. Even the softer ballads exude a tangible energy and exuberance. The more familiar tracks, the (in)famous R&R covers "Ain't That a Shame," "Two Hearts," "Tutti Frutti," and "At My Front Door," comprise the centerpiece of this album. A fresh listen to the lesser-known "Gee Whittakers" is really a must. The song is pure fun from beginning to end and is almost contagious. But, really, that's what what these early Boone "rockers" are all about. Not raw, not raucous — nothing to be taken too seriously. Just a lively, energetic, good time. Enjoy.

With his trademark white buck shoes, perfectly combed hair and gleaming smile, Boone was the very essence of wholesome American values, and at a time when the rise of rock & roll was viewed as a sign of the apocalypse, he made the music appear safe and non-threatening, earning some 38 Top 40 hits in the process. It's fitting that his achievements rank...
