Decades into his illustrious career, Ravi Shankar infuses Spirit of India with an hour of sheer spiritual bliss to delight both ears and essence. The heartrending "Raga Bairagi Todi" finds the master exploring his sitar's lower register at length without losing sight of the instrument's emotional expressiveness. The more abstract, cerebral "Raga Gaud Sarang" features a bumblebee-like melody in its fast section, while in the climax of the three-part "Raga Mishra Gara", the fleet interplay of sitar and tabla culminates in a near-psychedelic frenzy.

Rabindra Shankar Chowdery, aka Ravi Shankar, was born on April 7, 1920, in Varanasi, India, into a well-off orthodox Brahmin family. His father, ShyÆm Shankar, was employed as a diwan (minister) by the Maharajah of Jhalawar.
