About (Sandy) Alex G

Alex Giannascoli flew largely under the radar, using his stage name, Alex G, to release his introspective lo-fi indie pop, which ended up on many reputable 2014 best-of lists. As a teenager, the Pennsylvania native wrote and recorded music in his bedroom, producing a sound that channeled the likes of Elliott Smith and Built to Spill, and eventually came to the attention of musician Mat Cothran of Elvis Depressedly in 2012, when Giannascoli was attending Temple University. Cothran subsequently shared the homemade demos and approached him to play his first live show. The following year, Alex G was signed by indie label Orchid Tapes, the home of a community of songwriters, including Mat Cothran and Teen Suicide frontman Sam Ray's solo projects. In 2014 he released his home-recorded label debut, DSU, and dropped out of school to pursue music. U.K. label Lucky Number mastered and released a couple of his earlier D.I.Y. albums, Trick and Rules, in the spring of 2015, and he signed with Domino Records for his DSU follow-up, Beach Music, issued in October of that year. That album further grew his reputation, and in the summer of 2016 he was one of a number of guest performers on the Frank Ocean video album Endless, contributing guitar to four of the tracks. ~ Scott Kerr & Marcy Donelson, Rovi
