About Thelma Carpenter

Vocalist Thelma Carpenter enjoyed a long and rich career in radio, recording, vaudeville, television, movies, and the stage. Discovered by famed talent scout John Hammond when she was 19, she worked alongside Coleman Hawkins, Count Basie, and Teddy Wilson, and recorded as a headliner and backing vocalist. She provided the singing voice for screen stars who couldn't carry a tune, and was a frequent guest on Eddie Cantor's radio show. She starred in several Broadway revues, played Dolly Levi on-stage in Hello Dolly!, appeared in the 1978 film version of The Wiz, and was a guest star on The Cosby Show at the age of 74.
