Band of Gold: The Best of Freda Payne is a lengthy, comprehensive overview of Freda Payne's peak recordings from the early '70s, including not just hits like "Band of Gold," "Deeper and Deeper," and "Bring the Boys Home." This may seem like a lotta Freda, but her recordings are surprisingly consistent — even when the songs are subpar, the recordings are appealing, as are her performances. There may be more concise collections to appeal to the less-dedicated listener, but for a true appreciation of Payne, this is the disc to get. (Besides, it has an absolutely terrific cover.)
