Album Review

This CD features high-quality bebop and hard bop from a variety of fine players from the Massachusetts area. Only trombonist Hal Crook is somewhat well-known, but altoist Jay Brandford, tenor saxophonist Dave Finucane, and particularly trumpeter Andy Gravish (who often takes solo honors) are also excellent. The tunes are mostly swinging Brandford originals, some of which deserve to catch on (although they obviously haven't), and the solos are consistently colorful. Among the highlights are "Drop Me Off in Brooklyn," "Half Moon," and Charlie Parker's "Constellation." Worth searching for.
