Album Review

Denny Zeitlin and David Friesen make up one of the most enjoyable piano/bass duos of the 1990s; this CD includes some of their best performances from several live dates on the West Coast. Their dramatic take on "Airegin" is matched by a very lyrical (and very refreshing) interpretation of "My Funny Valentine." Their original works are just as rewarding, especially Zeitlin's coy "Moving Parts" and Friesen's bittersweet ballad "Returning." Highly recommended.

Zeitlin has one of the more unusual "day gigs" for a jazz musician: he's a psychiatrist. Zeitlin's parents were involved in both music and medicine. They started him on the piano at age two; he continued to study classical music while in elementary school, then began playing jazz in high school. Zeitlin began playing professionally in and around his hometown of Chicago as a teenager.
