iTunes Review

Lushly orchestrated and lyrically complex, Odessa marked a creative breakthrough for the brothers Gibb. Released as a two-disc set in 1969, the album interweaves vignettes of loss and dislocation with the sort of poignant love balladry that The Bee Gees had made their trademark. A nostalgic aura pervades these songs, captured in the album’s grand orchestral arrangements and the melancholy imagery of tunes like “Odessa (City on the Black Sea),” “Black Diamond," and “Lamplight.” The tracks' sonic range is impressive, stretching from the old-time country strains of “Give Your Best” to the swelling string flourishes of the instrumental “Seven Seas Symphony.” Overtones of Victorian whimsy color “Edison,” while “Suddenly” adds some needed folk-rock drive. The bittersweet, Christmas-themed “First of May” and the elegantly tender “Melody Fair” are baroque pop gems that rank among the band’s best work. Odessa is a milestone in British symphonic rock, as well as a high point in The Bee Gees’ canon.

Their long-reaching influence extended past sales figures and saw their sound and style mirrored in acts as disparate as Justin Timberlake...
