About The People

The People were one of five Belfast groups included on the 1966 Ember Records LP compilation Ireland's Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups from Belfast's Maritime Club. Eric Wrixon, who had played keyboards in Them for a while, was in the group, which evolved from Tony & the Telstars (which included Rod Demick, later to go on to the closest Them sound-alike ever, the Wheels). With George O'Hara on lead vocals, the People recorded two covers for the Ember Records anthology, "I'm with You" (originally recorded by Liverpool band the Big Three) and Buddy Holly's "Well...All Right." The People had not planned on cutting these tunes, but were asked to record on the spot as they happened to be in the studio, both of the tracks being done in single takes after a soundcheck. Even in comparison to the other bands that filled out this marginal compilation, the People possessed little originality or distinction, although the songs were competently essayed. Both tracks were reissued on the Big Beat compilation Belfast Beat Maritime Blues, an anthology of mid-'60s tracks by Belfast groups. Two of the members of the People lineup on these recordings, Ernie Graham and Davy Lutton, were later part of Eire Apparent, and Graham recorded as a solo artist. ~ Richie Unterberger
