Albert, born just after world war two in the two up and two down back to back terraced houses of Salford near to the docks, dreamed of adventure from a very early age.
After two years in Grammar school he finally managed to get himself expelled, at last free to carry out his dream, he was fifteen years old, shortly after his birthday, he sneaked off to London without telling a soul where he was going.
This is the story of how he survived those early years and followed his dream of seeing the world by joining the merchant navy,in a world of drunkenness, violence, prostitution, homosexuality and crime he traveled around from one dockland slum to another.
He had to learn to survive very quickly and his decision to take a long voyage on a tramp steamship, meant that there was no turning back.
This is the story of his experiences on his first voyage to sea.
